Description
Bruce Watson's Sacco and Vanzetti: The Men, the Murders and the Judgment of Mankind (2007) is a penetrating and capacious account of the famous 1920 trial of the two Italian immigrants, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti and their subsequent imprisonment while their lawyers made applications for rehearings. It is gracefully written and manages to bring the two accused and the other key players in their legal drama abundantly alive. Sacco and Vanzetti were anarchists who believed violent action was needed to overthrow the American government. At the outset of the book Watson evokes the desperate social conditions in America after World War I which provoked considerable support for anarchism. He grippingly recounts the anarchist bomb plot of April 1919. Thirty identical bombs were delivered to the Manhattan Post Office, each to be sent out to a prominent American--including John D. Rockefeller, Oliver Wendell Homes and others singled out for oppressing radicals. The bombs were to go off on May 1 as part of a devastating May Day demonstration.
